Highlights of the Afton Mining Camp

Abacus now has NI 43-101 compliant resources calculated for three deposits in the Afton area – Ajax West, DM-Audra and Rainbow.  A fourth resource calculation, for Ajax East (0.5 km east of Ajax West), is expected in mid 2007.  All of the current resources remain open and future drilling is planned to expand, and to upgrade them to the reserve category.

The following table summarizes the current 43-101 compliant resources on the Abacus Afton Project:

The resources, coupled with the infrastructure purchased from Teck-Cominco in 2005 will allow Abacus to move forward quickly in the Afton camp.  The infrastructure purchased from Teck-Cominco includes a tailings pond, water rights, mill and shop buildings, rights of way and surface rights.  Preliminary independent engineering studies have indicated that the existing tailings facilities can be upgraded to hold at least 250 million tons of new material.

The Existing mine infrastructure

Independent evaluation of existing haulage roads, mill buildings, mechanical shop and tailings pond puts deemed value at $33–38 million.

Fast track to 2010 production:

  • Economic studies move forward based on all resources
  • Feasibility study by year end
  • Additional resource at Ajax East due in 2007
  • Aggressive drilling to expand 4 other known copper gold zones

The 2007 Metallurgical study showed 90% and 85% recoveries for Copper and Gold produce concentrate grading 28.8% copper and 17.8 g/t gold.

History of the Abacus Afton Mining Camp

The Afton area, located just a few kilometres west of the city of Kamloops BC, is host to one of the most prolific mine camps in British Columbia. Production can be traced back over one-hundred years; but more recently, the area has seen production through five open pit deposits. This includes the Afton mine, which produced 30.84 million tons grading 1.0% copper, 0.58 g/t gold, and 4.19 g/t silver, and the Ajax East and West, Crescent, and Pothook pits. Mine production in the Afton area ceased in 1997.

In 2000, DRC Resources (since renamed New Gold Inc.) began exploring beneath the Afton mine open pit and have been successful in discovering higher-grade copper-gold mineralization thought to be amenable to underground mining. In 2002 and 2004, Abacus signed option Agreements with Teck Cominco Ltd. and Discovery Enterprises Corp. respectively, to earn a 100% interest, in 52 mineral claims and 20 patented claims including the Crescent and Ajax pits. The claims are adjacent to and surround New Gold's properties. In 2004, Abacus fulfilled the terms of their Agreement with Teck Cominco by completing an extensive diamond drill program; thus holding a 100% interest, subject to a Teck Cominco back-in right. In 2005, Abacus announced the acquisition of the past producing Afton mill infrastructure, tailings pond, and related permits and surface rights; and purchase of the aforementioned back-in right.

Geology Overview

The Afton area is historically known to host copper-gold rich porphyry systems. The regional geology is dominated by the northwest trending Iron Mask Batholith, an alkaline intrusive body approximately 20 kilometres long and up to 5 kilometres wide, that lies within the Nicola Volcanic group of rocks. The batholith consists of four intrusive phases known as Pothook, Cherry Creek, Sugarloaf and Ironmask Hybrid rocks. Both the intrusive phases and the host Nicola Volcanic group of rocks are Late Triassic in age.

All known significant mineralization and deposits in the Afton area are hosted in younger phases of the batholith (Sugarloaf diorite and Cherry Creek monzonite) where they are in contact with an older phase (Pothook diorite). They are aligned within or proximal to either an east-west structural corridor (Afton, eastwards to DM-Audra-Crescent, Big Onion/Iron Mask) or a northwest-southeast corridor known as the Leemac Fault (Afton, southeast to Pothook, Coquihalla, Rainbow, and the Ajax zones) Higher-grade copper-gold mineralization is often associated with fault and intrusion breccias. The most common ore minerals are chalcopyrite and lesser bornite; however, copper carbonates, native copper and chalcocite are other important minerals in the supergene zone capping the Afton deposit. Gold is ubiquitously associated with copper mineralization. Minor molybdenite is found mainly localized along fractures in most of the camp deposits. Platinum group elements (PGE's), particularly palladium, are also present, proximal to contact areas of Pothook Hybrid and/or picrite with the younger intrusives. Albitization of the host intrusives is common at Rainbow and Ajax West and varies in intensity from weak to very strong---sometimes obliterating all primary textures. Albitization is thought to predate mineralization.
